Nowadays, compact smartphones are a rare breed since manufacturers choose to concentrate on huge smartphones because of high demand. Nevertheless, there are several smartphones like the Apple iPhone 13, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, Asus Zenfone 8 etc that are catered to people who are not ready to carry large slabs of glass on a daily basis.
This got me wondering: what is the top high-end small smartphone available in India right now? Looking around, the Apple iPhone 13 and the latest Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 are some of the genuine deserving competitors. Though there is the iPhone 13 Mini from Apple, which is a truly compact device, it is a little too small for most people.
As of writing this review, we still don't have the exact pricing for the Samsung Galaxy Flip 4 but given the history of other Samsung Flip devices, we can get a rough idea of the price. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 price in India will be around Rs 89999 for the entry variant. On the other hand, the iPhone 13 is available for quite some time. The Apple iPhone 13 Price in India is Rs 79900 for the base variant.
The design is a crucial factor to consider when buying any new device. We spend hours each day staring at our phones, so why would we want to gaze at something that is ugly? Thankfully, both phones feature sleek, contemporary designs. However, there are a number of clear distinctions between the two.
The design of the iPhone 13 is similar to that of the Apple iPhone 12. It has a stainless steel frame with a glossy finish and a matte glass rear. The camera bump is similar to the previous generation iPhone 12 but the location of the lens has been changed slightly. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is constructed of armour-grade metal and incredibly thin glass. It has a hinge in the middle and a more efficient camera bump. Visually there is little difference between the older Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Z Flip 4
The Galaxy Z Flip 4 only offers four colour options, compared to the iPhone 13's five. However, it's noteworthy that you can get the Samsung phone in its Bespoke Edition, which enables you to change the colours of various sections of it. The end result is special and represents your preferences. Clearly, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 defeats the iPhone 13 in this contest because of its superior and innovative design.
Another key feature to consider when choosing a new phone is the display. After all, the majority of how we utilise these devices is through looking at and touching their screens. Therefore, a poor display would provide the customer with a bad experience. Both premium smartphones offer excellent displays, as might be expected. One of them, though, goes a step farther.
The Galaxy Z Flip 4 triumphs in this contest despite the iPhone 13 having a slightly sharper display, due to its creative use of a foldable display. The main screen of the Samsung phone is 6.7 inches and can be folded in half. Because of this, you can use a huge phone screen without compromising your comfort. You simply fold it to convert it to its compact shape when you want to put it in your pocket. Folding the screen in half also protects the primary display from nicks and scratches from other items in your pocket.
You get a tiny cover screen adjacent to the rear camera system so you can check your alerts without unfolding the entire gadget. Consider this cover display to be a peeking window that enables you to see time-critical events after folding your Flip. Other than that, both phones have equal brightness levels but only the Z Flip 4 has 120Hz refresh rates.
When purchasing a brand-new, high-end phone, you anticipate a lag-free experience as well. That is often mostly decided by its operating system, memory, and processor. Benchmark results for the Apple A15 Bionic and Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 CPUs have been examined. In the mobile space, both chipsets perform admirably, with the A15 standing out in the overall single-core and multi-core performance tests. In contrast, the Qualcomm chipset outperforms the A15 in terms of gaming. The Apple chip, however, has a better overall rating.
Scores don't matter as much as practicality, though. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 and iPhone 13 should both function without a hitch. But remember that iOS has objectively fewer bugs than Android OS. Because of this, even if the two phones have powerful chips, you can experience fewer lags and bugs when using the iPhone. In the end, both gadgets work just fine for daily chores or heavy use cases.
The Galaxy Z Flip 4 has come on top in most of the previous rounds. It does, however, have some issues with the camera. The iPhone 13 comes with a 12MP TrueDepth camera system for the front-facing or selfie camera. You can use Face ID to authenticate yourself by taking 3D face mappings. On the other hand, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 offers a standard 10MP camera. You must rely on the fingerprint scanner found on the side button for authentication.
Wide and Ultra Wide lenses are available on both phones' backs, with Apple striving for higher resolutions and better apertures. None of the devices has a telephoto camera for taking images of faraway objects. iPhone 13 has overall better camera quality and capabilities. The Galaxy Z Flip 4's camera output, however, is far above average.
Battery comparisons have shifted to other areas as the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and iPhone 13 can both run continuously for a full day on a single charge. The Samsung phone, for example, features a USB Type-C connection, which is more widely accepted and used. On the iPhone, Apple still uses its own Lightning port. This contributes to the Galaxy phone's lead.
The reverse Qi wireless charging capabilities of the two phones, though, maybe their most distinguishing feature. A Qi-compatible device can be placed on the back of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 to get wireless charging. While you can wirelessly charge your iPhone with Qi or MagSafe, you can't use the iPhone to charge other devices, such as your AirPods. Samsung wins this round for utilising the more standard port and because the option to share power is actually a very practical and attractive feature.
Even though in daily life the iPhone 13 can be a way better companion, the sheer uniqueness of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is way more alluring compared to the iPhone and other compact phones including the Zenfone 9 and Xiaomi Mi 12.
