Tencent, a leading Chinese technology company, has dismissed a senior employee after his annual compensation details appeared online. The employee, identified by the surname Ye, served as a project manager in Tencent’s Weixin Group, which operates the WeChat platform. The company accused Ye of sharing sensitive information outside the organization, leading to his termination and a permanent ban from future employment at Tencent.
The situation escalated after a screenshot of Ye’s compensation package circulated on Chinese social media. The image, reportedly taken from an internal Tencent platform, revealed Ye’s annual compensation at about 3.17 million yuan, or approximately Rs 4.4 crore. The package included a cash bonus exceeding 820,000 yuan and stock incentives valued at over 2.35 million yuan. These figures quickly became a topic of widespread discussion online.
Tencent’s Anti-Corruption Investigation Department issued an internal notice stating that the leak caused a “severe negative impact both inside and outside the company.” The notice, seen by at least three Tencent employees, emphasized the seriousness of the breach. The company clarified that Ye’s dismissal was due to the unauthorized sharing of sensitive corporate information, not the size of his compensation.
Tencent maintains strict policies on confidential information, including trade secrets, internal communications, unreleased source code, and employee records. The company’s internal notice indicated that a separate formal circular would provide further details about the disciplinary action taken against Ye for violating executive conduct rules.
The incident comes as Tencent continues to strengthen its internal compliance efforts. In its annual corporate report released in January, Tencent disclosed that its anti-corruption unit identified more than 70 compliance violations during 2025. These investigations led to the dismissal of over 90 employees. Additionally, more than 20 individuals were referred to law enforcement agencies for criminal prosecution.
Ye worked in the Weixin Group, Tencent’s core business unit responsible for WeChat. WeChat is a major messaging and super-app platform with around 1.3 billion users. It remains one of Tencent’s most significant products, playing a central role in the company’s operations and revenue.
The disclosure of Ye’s compensation and the subsequent disciplinary action highlight Tencent’s commitment to protecting sensitive information and enforcing internal policies. The company’s response reflects ongoing efforts to maintain compliance and safeguard its business interests in a highly competitive technology sector.
