Artificial intelligence is evolving beyond a productivity tool. Companies are now preparing for AI systems that can act independently, make decisions, retrieve information, and complete tasks without human input. Brian Chesky, CEO of Airbnb, is the latest industry leader to signal this shift. He is reportedly establishing a new artificial intelligence lab focused on developing AI models and reimagining user interactions with AI-powered services.
According to Bloomberg, Chesky is in the early stages of funding this venture. He will remain CEO of Airbnb and will not lead the new AI lab as chief executive. The lab will operate independently from Airbnb.
Chesky’s interest in launching an AI lab may seem unusual for the head of a travel company. Many AI firms, including OpenAI and Anthropic, are racing to build advanced models. However, Chesky believes the next major development in AI is not just intelligence, but user experience.
Current AI tools mainly use chat interfaces, where users type questions and receive text responses. Chesky has argued that services like travel booking and e-commerce require more interactive and immersive experiences than simple chatbots can provide. His goal is not to create a better chatbot, but to explore new ways for people to interact with AI when planning trips, shopping, or making decisions.
Many travel companies have partnered with AI firms to integrate AI assistants into their services. For example, Expedia Group and Booking Holdings have enabled users to access travel services through AI-powered platforms. Airbnb has taken a different approach. Chesky has stated that current AI tools do not yet meet the standards for the experience Airbnb wants to offer. Instead of building around existing chatbot platforms, Airbnb has focused on using AI internally to improve operations.
Within Airbnb, employees now use AI coding tools to accelerate product development. Chesky reports that projects which previously took years can now be tested in weeks. This internal use of AI has helped the company innovate more quickly.
The timing of Chesky’s move aligns with broader industry changes. Morgan Stanley recently announced that it will allow AI agents to access data and insights from its platform. This marks a shift from users manually searching for information to AI agents performing these tasks autonomously. In the future, users may simply instruct an AI assistant, which will then retrieve information, complete workflows, and execute actions on their behalf.
AI is transitioning from an assistant role to an operator role. For years, AI has answered questions, summarized documents, and generated content. Now, companies are preparing for AI systems that can operate software, interact with platforms, and carry out tasks without direct human oversight. Chesky’s new AI lab and Morgan Stanley’s initiatives highlight how industries are adapting to this new phase of AI development.
