Google has released Android 17 Beta 4 for developers. A recent report reveals that this build contains references to a new feature called Pixel Glow. This feature suggests that future Pixel devices may include LED lighting on the rear panel for notifications.
The Pixel Glow feature appears to function as an LED-based notification system. It is similar to the front-facing notification lights found on older smartphones. According to a screenshot in the report, Pixel Glow will use colored lights on the rear panel to alert users to incoming notifications. These lights will be visible when the device is placed face down.
The report notes that Pixel Glow will not be active when Flash notifications are enabled. The feature will require dedicated hardware lighting on the device, as indicated by code found in the beta build. This suggests that future Pixel devices may include new hardware components to support this feature.
Code strings in Android 17 Beta 4 point to several possible uses for Pixel Glow. These include subtle lighting effects for incoming calls from favorite contacts, visual feedback during hands-free operations, and lights when interacting with Gemini. The feature may also provide other types of visual feedback, depending on the context.
Despite these findings, leaked renders of upcoming Pixel devices do not show any visible rear lighting hardware. This raises questions about how Google will implement Pixel Glow. It remains unclear whether the feature will appear in the next Pixel model or a future release.
