Google has introduced controller remapping in the Android 17 beta, responding to strong user demand. This feature allows users to customize their game controller functions at the system level. Once set, these changes apply to all games, eliminating the need to adjust controls for each title individually.

Key Highlights

  • Android 17 beta introduces system-wide controller remapping for all games
  • Feature supports both wired and Bluetooth controllers with customizable button mapping
  • Controller remapping is available only in Android 17 Beta 2 and later versions
  • Users must enroll in the Android Beta program to access this feature

Controller Remapping Details

The new feature supports both wired and Bluetooth controllers. Users can remap face buttons, triggers, and thumbstick clicks. Directional inputs, such as swapping the D-pad with analog sticks, can also be adjusted. This flexibility aims to improve gaming experiences across different devices and games.

Controller remapping is available through the Settings menu. For wired controllers, users should navigate to Settings, then System, and select Game Controller. For Bluetooth controllers, access is through Settings, then Connected Devices. Users can tap the menu icon next to their controller and select Game Controller settings from the Device details page.

Availability and Requirements

This feature is currently limited to Android 17 Beta, specifically Beta 2 and later versions. Only devices enrolled in the Android Beta program can access and test the controller remapping option. As the feature remains in beta, users may encounter minor issues during use.

Google added this feature following repeated feedback from the gaming community. The update was confirmed by Mishaal Rahman, Android Community Engagement Manager. The company aims to streamline gaming controls and reduce setup time for users.

Additional Context

Controller remapping at the system level is a significant step for Android gaming. It provides a unified experience across all games, regardless of the controller type. This update reflects Google's ongoing efforts to enhance user customization and accessibility in Android.
