Anthropic recently unveiled its new cybersecurity AI model, Mythos, but limited its release due to concerns about misuse. The company stated that making Mythos widely available could allow cybercriminals to exploit the technology for hacking or other malicious activities. As a result, Anthropic has only provided access to a select group of customers.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman criticized Anthropic's approach and messaging regarding Mythos. In a podcast appearance on Core Memory, Altman suggested that Anthropic's warnings resembled 'fear-based marketing.' He noted that some in the AI industry prefer to restrict access to advanced technology, justifying it in various ways.
Altman compared Anthropic's strategy to dramatic marketing tactics. He said, 'It is clearly incredible marketing to say, we have built a bomb, we are about to drop it on your head. We will sell you a bomb shelter for $100 million.' His remarks highlighted the use of alarming language to promote AI products.
The use of fear-driven messaging is not unique to Anthropic. The AI industry has often framed its technology as powerful and potentially dangerous. Companies have used dramatic warnings and narratives to emphasize the importance of responsible AI development and deployment.
Anthropic's decision to restrict Mythos follows a broader trend in the industry. Tech companies sometimes limit access to advanced AI models to prevent misuse and address ethical concerns. However, this approach can also draw criticism from competitors and industry observers.
Other AI advancements continue to emerge. For example, ChatGPT Images 2.0 now offers improved photorealism and better Hindi text rendering. Meanwhile, Google has created a strike team to enhance its AI coding models and compete with companies like Anthropic.
The debate over responsible AI release and industry messaging remains ongoing. Leaders in the field, including Sam Altman, continue to discuss the balance between innovation, safety, and public communication.
