Anthropic will make auto mode the default setting for Claude Code starting August 14. This change affects Pro, Max, and Team users. The company says auto mode allows the coding agent to make decisions without user approval for most tasks. In testing, auto mode flagged 89 percent of dangerous commands, compared to only 11 percent detected by humans during manual review.
Claude Code's auto mode checks each command with a separate classifier. The system only stops for manual approval if a task is irreversible, destructive, or targets areas outside the user's environment. If auto mode blocks a dangerous command, Claude tries a safer approach or asks the user for input. If blocked three times in a row or 20 times in a session, the system switches to manual approvals.
Anthropic reports that users approve 97 percent of permission prompts, suggesting manual review often becomes routine. In longer sessions, human detection of dangerous commands drops to about 5 percent after 50 or more prompts, while auto mode remains consistent. The company says auto mode reduces risk for most users but does not eliminate it. Users should still review high-stakes changes to production infrastructure.
With auto mode, Claude Code can run longer tasks without frequent interruptions. This allows users to leave multi-hour jobs running in the background. The feature works well with models designed for extended tasks, such as Opus 5. Users can start several tasks in parallel and return to completed pull requests for review.
Anthropic states that Teams and Enterprise users employing auto mode ship about 25 percent more pull requests. Companies like Adobe, Nuro, Gusto, and Garner Health already use auto mode as their production default. The company will notify users in-app when the default changes. Users can switch modes using Shift+Tab, and administrators can set or disable the default mode as needed.
Auto mode will remain opt-in for Claude Enterprise, Claude API, Claude Platform on AWS, Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud's Agent Platform, and Microsoft Foundry. Anthropic plans to make auto mode the default for these platforms in the coming month, after notifying administrators. The company also announced that extra tokens used by the auto mode classifier will no longer count toward usage limits.
