Apple has eliminated all plastic from its product packaging, now using only 100% fiber-based materials that are recyclable at home. The company also increased the use of recycled materials in its devices, reaching 30% recycled content across all products shipped last year.

Key Highlights

  • Apple packaging now uses 100 percent fiber-based recyclable materials
  • 30 percent of materials in Apple products shipped last year were recycled
  • One Apple laptop model features 60 percent recycled content, the highest in any Apple device
  • Apple reduced plastic use by over 15,000 metric tons in five years
  • Earth Day offer gives 10 percent discount on AirPods and accessories for recycling select products

Recycled Materials in Apple Products

Apple reports that three specific areas of its products now use 100% recycled content. The company sources all materials, recycled or not, with strict human rights and environmental standards in place for its supply chain.

One new Apple product stands out for its eco-friendly design, containing 60% recycled content overall. This is the highest percentage of recycled material in any Apple device to date. The enclosure for this $600 laptop is manufactured using a material-efficient process that reduces raw material use by half.

The aluminum anodizing process in this product also conserves water, with 70% of the water reused during production. These steps reflect Apple's ongoing commitment to sustainable manufacturing practices.

Environmental Impact and Corporate Initiatives

Over the past five years, Apple has reduced plastic usage by more than 15,000 metric tons, largely due to its shift to all-fiber packaging. The company’s offices and retail stores worldwide now operate on 100% renewable energy. Its supply chain also uses more than 20 gigawatts of renewable energy.

Apple has made progress in water conservation as well. The company replenishes 55% of the water used at its facilities. Suppliers have cut water usage by 17 billion gallons, further reducing environmental impact.

Looking ahead, Apple aims to achieve full carbon neutrality across its operations by 2030. The company also plans to replenish all water used by its facilities as part of its long-term sustainability goals.

Earth Day Initiatives and Consumer Incentives

To mark Earth Day, Apple is offering a 10% discount on AirPods and accessories at participating stores. This offer is available to customers who recycle select Apple products and runs until May 16. The initiative encourages consumers to participate in recycling and supports Apple’s environmental objectives.
