Apple has begun rolling out encrypted RCS messaging to iPhones with the latest iOS 26.5 update. This new feature is part of a collaboration between Apple and Google to improve privacy and security for messages sent between Android and iPhone devices. With this update, users can now send RCS messages that are protected by end-to-end encryption. Only the sender and recipient can read these messages, ensuring that neither Apple nor Google can access the content.
The encrypted RCS messaging feature is currently available in beta for iPhone users running iOS 26.5 with supported carriers. Android users must have the latest version of Google Messages to participate in encrypted RCS chats. Apple has stated that encryption will be enabled automatically for both new and existing RCS conversations over time. Users will see a lock icon in RCS chats, indicating that the conversation is protected by end-to-end encryption. The feature is enabled by default, so users do not need to activate it manually.
Apple emphasized that iMessage has always offered end-to-end encryption and remains the preferred method for secure communication between Apple devices. The addition of encrypted RCS messaging extends privacy protections to conversations between iPhone and Android users.
RCS, or Rich Communication Services, is a modern messaging standard designed to replace the older SMS system. RCS supports advanced features such as high-quality photo and video sharing, typing indicators, read receipts, reactions, and improved group chats. RCS is not a separate messaging app but a technology integrated into supported messaging apps and carriers. For RCS to function correctly, both the sender and receiver must use compatible devices and applications.
This update marks a significant step in making cross-platform messaging more secure. It also aligns with broader industry efforts to enhance user privacy and data protection. The rollout of encrypted RCS messaging is ongoing, and more users will gain access as carriers and devices update their software.
