Walt Disney is stepping boldly into the future by forming a dedicated group to manage the integration of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and mixed reality (XR). As the entertainment titan seeks to leverage these innovations across its film, television, and theme park divisions, the newly established Office of Technology Enablement aims to coordinate efforts and drive creativity within the company.
The Office of Technology Enablement will be headed by Jamie Voris, the current Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Disney's film studio, who has been pivotal in developing the company’s app for the Apple Vision Pro mixed reality headset. Following Voris’s leadership, Eddie Drake will step into the CTO role for the film studio. In an internal email, Alan Bergman, Co-Chairman of Disney Entertainment, highlighted the importance of this initiative in navigating the fast-evolving landscape of technology.
Strategic Vision
Bergman emphasized that the rapid advancements in AI and XR are transformative, significantly impacting consumer interactions and creative projects for years to come. The new office will not centralize all tech initiatives but will instead ensure that various projects align with Disney’s overarching strategy. This decentralized approach fosters innovation while maintaining a cohesive vision across all divisions.
Initially, the Office of Technology Enablement will launch with a core leadership team and plans to expand to about 100 employees. This growth reflects Disney's commitment to building a robust workforce capable of exploring the potential of AI and mixed reality technologies.
Disney is familiar with exploring the possibilities offered by augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality. These technologies have the potential to revolutionize how audiences interact with content, especially in theme parks and home environments. For instance, Kyle Laughlin, a seasoned Disney professional with expertise in AR, VR, and AI, recently returned as Senior Vice President of Research and Development at Walt Disney Imagineering. His role focuses on leveraging these technologies to enhance Disney's iconic attractions and create unforgettable experiences for visitors.
As the demand for AR and VR technologies surges, the market is witnessing significant competition. According to research from IDC, approximately 1.7 million AR/VR headsets have been sold in 2023, with Meta holding a commanding 60.5% market share. However, competitors like Sony, Apple, and ByteDance are beginning to encroach on Meta's territory, and Google has hinted at a potential return to the AR/VR market.
Disney’s strategic move to establish a dedicated office reflects a proactive approach in a rapidly changing landscape, ensuring the company remains at the forefront of innovation.
Walt Disney's formation of the Office of Technology Enablement marks a pivotal step in integrating advanced technologies within its diverse entertainment offerings. By focusing on AI and mixed reality, Disney is poised to create enhanced consumer experiences while navigating the complexities of this evolving technological landscape. With strong leadership and a commitment to innovation, Disney is set to redefine the future of entertainment, ensuring that it remains a leader in creativity and technology.
