Eric Schmidt's Speech Met With Boos

Eric Schmidt was invited as the commencement speaker for the University of Arizona’s graduation ceremony. As he addressed the crowd, he tried to encourage students to engage with AI. In one notable moment, Schmidt asked, “The question is whether you will help shape artificial intelligence.” However, the crowd responded with loud boos, drowning out his remarks.

Schmidt attempted to continue, saying, “If you'd let me make this point, please.” Despite his efforts to remain composed, the negative reaction persisted. He was forced to pause several times as the boos grew louder. At one point, Schmidt turned away from the audience, waiting for the noise to subside before resuming his speech.

Throughout his address, Schmidt emphasized the importance of embracing new opportunities. He told students, “When someone offers you a seat on the rocket ship, you do not ask which seat. You just get on. The rocket ship is here.” Despite his encouragement, the audience remained unreceptive.

Schmidt acknowledged the students’ concerns, stating, “I can hear you. There is a fear.” He described these fears as rational and urged students to participate in shaping the future of AI. However, his words did not appear to sway the crowd.

Concerns Over AI and Job Security

The reaction at the ceremony reflects broader anxieties about AI’s impact on employment. Recent studies indicate that companies are less willing to hire entry-level workers, and mass layoffs have affected thousands. Many fear that AI could replace jobs, especially for new graduates entering the workforce.

Schmidt concluded his speech by offering advice on finding meaning in work and relationships. He said, “Happiness, I have come to believe, is not the same as joy. Happiness is derived from meaning. Meaning in your work. Meaning in your relationships.” Despite the ongoing boos, Schmidt maintained a smile throughout his speech.

Protests Linked to Allegations

AI was not the only reason for the negative reception. Some students protested Schmidt’s appearance due to sexual assault allegations made by his ex-girlfriend, Michelle Ritter. Ritter, now 32, met Schmidt, who is 71, in 2020. Student advocacy groups encouraged attendees to turn their backs to the stage and to boo Schmidt to express their disapproval.

According to the Arizona Daily Star, protest organizers wanted to signal that the university community does not support giving a platform to individuals facing such allegations. Schmidt’s attorney told Business Insider that the accusations were “fabricated.” In March, a judge ordered the case to be settled through arbitration.
