The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) manages the Central Equipment Identity Registry (CEIR), a system designed to reduce the number of counterfeit mobile phones in India. The platform is now available in all states and Union Territories, allowing residents to report lost smartphones.

Ceir

The service was first launched in 2019 in three states, with the remainder of the country receiving it on March 15, 2022. Users can access CEIR via its website or mobile app, available for both Android and iOS. To use the service, users must provide their phone's unique IMEI number, which can be found on the box or by dialling *#06# on their device.

How to use CEIR to track your lost smartphone

The Central Equipment Identity Registry (CEIR) is a system managed by the Indian Department of Telecommunications that helps prevent the sale of counterfeit mobile phones.

The system has now been rolled out across all Indian states and union territories, and allows users to block their phones via their International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number in case they are lost or stolen. Users can access CEIR via its official website or app, and will need to provide details such as their mobile number, device model, and IMEI number, as well as file a First Information Report (FIR) with their nearest police station. Once a phone has been blocked, it cannot be used on any network in India, though the police can still track it.

If a phone is found, users can unblock it by submitting a Request ID and other details through the CEIR system.
