Google has announced a major milestone in AI-driven app development. Over 250,000 Android apps have been created using Google AI Studio's free, AI-powered tool within just one week of its launch. Most of these apps were built by people with no prior app development experience.
Logan Kilpatrick, a technical staff member working on Gemini at Google, shared the news on X. He stated that the new tool allows anyone to build native Android apps directly through AI Studio at no cost. According to Kilpatrick, more than 2.5 lakh apps have been created since the feature went live.
He emphasized that over 99% of these users had never built an Android app before. The AI Studio tool simplifies app development by removing the need for manual coding. Instead, users rely on Gemini-powered prompts and AI assistance to generate working Android apps.
Google aims to reach a broad audience with this tool. The company targets students, creators, small business owners, hobbyists, and individuals interested in building apps for personal use. The tool's accessibility is designed to make app development possible for anyone, regardless of technical background.
In his announcement, Kilpatrick highlighted the scale of the Android platform. He noted that Android has over 3 billion active users. With AI Studio, anyone can now build an app for themselves or potentially for this vast audience. He remarked that such accessibility would have seemed unlikely just five years ago.
Currently, developers can deploy apps to the Play test track directly from AI Studio. Kilpatrick indicated that Google plans to enable direct publishing to the Play Store from AI Studio later this summer. This change could simplify the process for new developers, as publishing on the Play Store involves several steps.
To publish an app, developers must create a Play Console account and may need to complete identity verification. They must also provide app descriptions, screenshots, icons, privacy policy links, and other listing details. Compliance declarations are required, covering ads, target audience, data collection, and content ratings. Apps requesting sensitive permissions, such as location or SMS, undergo extra scrutiny. If login access is included, Google may request test credentials.
After uploading an Android App Bundle, Google reviews the app for policy compliance, malware risks, privacy issues, and misleading content. For first-time developers, this review can take several days. Google states that approvals may take up to seven days or longer in some cases.
The announcement has sparked discussion about the future of AI-generated apps. Some users online questioned whether lowering the barrier to entry would affect app quality and user adoption. Kilpatrick acknowledged these concerns and said Google will work on helping new apps find users.
Others raised issues about Play Store quality control, suggesting many AI-generated apps may not reach the store. Kilpatrick responded that app store quality standards should remain high. He noted that while many people may build apps for personal use, published apps must still meet strict requirements.
In a related comment, Kilpatrick revealed that he had never built an Android app himself before testing the tool internally five to six weeks ago.
