Google promotes artificial intelligence tools to help companies make hiring faster and more efficient. However, its own AI team has warned job seekers that the technology can be unreliable and may work against them. Google DeepMind's AGI Safety and Alignment Team has reportedly informed applicants that the company's hiring system could wrongly screen out CVs or delay applications from reaching the correct reviewers.
According to a document reviewed by Bloomberg, the AGI Safety and Alignment Team, which focuses on reducing risks from advanced AI, is advising candidates to submit a special form with their application. The document, marked "PLEASE DO NOT SHARE THIS DOC WIDELY," states that the form aims to reduce the risk of applications being automatically filtered out by Google's internal systems. The document explains, "We have an applications system with a non-trivial probability your CV will be screened out incorrectly or take too long to reach us. Filling out this form makes sure that a real human on the team will get to see your application."
Google DeepMind disputes the claim that its systems filter candidates incorrectly. A spokesperson told Bloomberg that the company seeks to "recruit and hire the most qualified talent at Google DeepMind." The spokesperson said the special form allows the team to receive CVs directly, bypassing the usual recruiter review. "This team set up a special form to go past the recruiter review, and get their resumes direct to the people on the team. But there are no shortcuts to getting hired," the spokesperson said.
Artificial intelligence is playing a larger role in recruitment, from writing job descriptions to analysing CVs and helping employers sort through large numbers of applications. Google markets Gemini for HR as a tool that can help recruiters analyse resumes, identify qualified candidates, track interview pipelines, and forecast hiring needs.
However, the increased use of AI in hiring is also creating new challenges for companies. While Google's situation highlights the risk of unreliable AI screening, some applicants are also learning to manipulate these systems. A 2025 report by The New York Times found that job seekers were embedding instructions in their CVs to influence AI screening tools and increase their chances. In one case, a recruiter discovered a prompt in a CV instructing ChatGPT to describe the candidate as exceptionally qualified.
There are ongoing concerns about whether AI hiring systems can make fair decisions. In 2026, a US federal court allowed claims to proceed against Workday in the class action Mobley v. Workday. The lawsuit alleges that Workday's AI-powered recruitment software discriminated against applicants based on race, age, and disability. Workday denies the allegations and states its systems are designed to support responsible hiring.
Academic research has raised similar questions about AI's ability to evaluate candidates fairly. A July 2025 paper titled "Fairness Is Not Enough: Auditing Competence and Intersectional Bias in AI-powered Resume Screening" by Kevin T. Webster found that some systems rely on superficial signals or keyword matching rather than assessing a candidate's qualifications. Other studies have shown that AI systems can produce different outcomes depending on demographic signals in a CV.
Applicants are also using AI to generate applications quickly, which creates another challenge for recruiters. The Google DeepMind team reportedly warned that human reviewers are encountering generic LLM-generated answers that "all sound very samey." In summary, while AI helps companies manage large volumes of applications, it also introduces new problems, including errors, bias, and attempts by candidates to game the system.
