High-Risk Alert: CERT-In Warns Android Users – Take Action Now!

The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued a warning regarding significant security vulnerabilities in Android devices. These flaws could allow attackers to access sensitive data, gain elevated system privileges, and execute code remotely. The vulnerabilities affect Android versions before 12, as well as versions 12L, 13, and 14.

CERT-In identified these issues as stemming from flaws in various system components, including the System, Google Play system updates, Framework, Kernel, MediaTek components, Qualcomm components, ARM components, Imagination Technologies, and Qualcomm’s closed-source components.

This warning follows a recent alert from CERT-In about vulnerabilities in Apple products, including iPhones, iPads, and Apple TVs.

Phone brands such as Vivo, Xiaomi, OnePlus, and Samsung use components affected by these security vulnerabilities, making their devices particularly susceptible. To mitigate these risks, users must check their phone’s settings and update to the latest software version.

To protect their devices, users are advised to promptly install any available updates and ensure their Android devices are running the latest software. It is also recommended to download apps only from trusted sources, activate automatic updates for both apps and the operating system, and exercise caution with unsolicited messages, emails, or links that may be phishing attempts.

Suppose a device shows signs of being compromised, such as unexpected slowdowns, random app installations, or intrusive pop-ups. In that case, users should consider performing a factory reset and backing up their data to a cloud service.
