Just five months after announcing 5G, India is preparing to adopt 6G. Prime Minister Modi presented the Bharat 6G Vision Document and introduced the 6G test bed on Wednesday.
The 6G test bed will be employed to experiment with and authenticate new technologies and research advancements for the forthcoming generation of wireless communication technology. In addition to the 6G vision, PM Modi inaugurated a regional office of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in Delhi.
PM Modi proclaimed, "Today, India is progressing towards digital revolution. India is the quickest country to introduce 5G. We are already discussing 6G technology within six months of the 5G launch. This demonstrates New India's confidence." During the inauguration, PM Modi said that he is thrilled to announce that Delhi will host the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly of the ITU.
PM Modi also stated that India will establish 100 5G laboratories in the following years. He also added that the Bharat 6G vision document and 6G test bed will encourage an environment of innovation and hasten the development of technology in the country. PM Modi emphasised that India launched 5G in 125 districts within 120 days.
A testbed can be explained as a platform where new ideas and concepts are experimented with before being introduced to a wider audience. Specifically designed for 6G, the 6G testbed is a space where researchers and developers can safely experiment and test new technologies and research advancements for the next generation of wireless communication technology.
With the 6G testbed, individuals can test and assess new technologies in a controlled environment, without any effect on real-world networks. This enables them to try out their concepts and observe how they perform in a realistic setting before implementing them on a large scale. These tests are carried out before the services are made available to the public.
It is worth mentioning that PM Modi launched the 5G services on October 1, 2022, during the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 6th edition. The PM had earlier stated that India would achieve 100% coverage of 5G services by the end of 2024. Currently, Jio 5G services are accessible in over 400 cities.
