Indians Are Flying To Dubai For Cheaper iPhones. Does The Math Work Out?

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max have triggered an unusual shopping trend, with some Indian buyers travelling to Dubai after finding a sizeable price gap between the two markets. For buyers already visiting the UAE, the difference can make the overseas purchase particularly attractive.

Apple's UAE pricing starts at AED 5,099 for the iPhone 18 Pro and AED 5,499 for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Based on recent exchange rates, these prices are approximately ₹1.32 lakh–₹1.33 lakh and ₹1.42 lakh–₹1.44 lakh, respectively. In India, the corresponding starting prices are ₹1,64,900 and ₹1,79,900.

Dubai iPhone prices create a sizeable India gap

The resulting difference is around ₹33,000 for the iPhone 18 Pro and approximately ₹38,000 for the Pro Max before adding airfare, visa expenses, accommodation or other travel costs. Both models are sold in the same 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB storage configurations, meaning the comparison involves the same new Pro lineup rather than an older or lower-specification version.

The new iPhones became available in the UAE from September 18, with Apple listing the Dubai-market prices directly.

Why some Indian buyers are doing the calculation

For a buyer travelling exclusively to Dubai for a single phone, the savings need to be weighed against the entire cost of the trip. However, the equation changes for someone already visiting relatives, travelling for work or purchasing more than one device.

Gulf News cited Indian buyers who said the Dubai price difference influenced their decision. One Mumbai buyer said the saving remained worthwhile even after accounting for a flight and visa, while another buyer from Kerala, who was already in Dubai to visit family, reported saving around ₹20,000–₹30,000 on the Pro Max.

Taxes and pricing structures explain the difference

The UAE applies 5% VAT, while smartphones sold in India are subject to a different tax and import-duty structure. These differences contribute to the gap between the two markets, particularly at the premium end of the smartphone segment.

Apple's iPhone 18 Pro models themselves have also received significant hardware upgrades, including the A20 Pro chip and a 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture. The Pro Max offers up to 45 hours of video playback according to Apple's UAE specifications.

Malaysia and Thailand add another option

Dubai is not the only overseas market attracting attention. Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam and the Philippines also have different iPhone 18 Pro pricing, with Malaysia cited as the least expensive among those markets in the comparison supplied by NDTV.

Ultimately, the calculation depends on the traveller's complete expenses. For someone already planning an overseas trip, the price gap can materially reduce the effective cost of an iPhone. For a dedicated shopping trip, airfare, visa, accommodation and Indian customs requirements need to be included before comparing the final cost.
