Infosys has been fined approximately Rs 2 crore by French labour authorities for not meeting local legal requirements in its employee work hour recording system. The regional labour authority, DRIEETS Ile-de-France, imposed a penalty of EUR 175,000. Infosys disclosed the fine in a stock exchange filing, stating it had received official communication about the penalty from French authorities.
The penalty was issued after French authorities found Infosys's system for recording working hours did not fully comply with local rules. The concerns focused on the system's reliability, the ability to maintain auditable records, and monitoring for certain categories of employees. French labour laws require employers to track working hours, including the statutory 35-hour workweek, overtime, and mandatory rest periods. These records must be reliable and available for audit.
The Infosys filing did not specify which employee categories were affected or whether the company must make changes to its time-recording system. Infosys stated that the penalty would not have a material impact on its financials, operations, or other business activities. The company is currently reviewing the communication and evaluating its next steps.
This development comes as Infosys has increased its office attendance requirements in India. Previously, employees at job level 7 and above were required to work from the office four days a week. In March, this policy was extended to employees in the 6A band in some business units, bringing more senior staff under stricter attendance rules. An internal email cited by The Economic Times informed employees that those at JL6 and above must be in the office four days a week. The communication also noted that some employees had not met the required 10 days of office attendance per month.
Despite these stricter office attendance policies, Infosys continues to describe its workplace model as hybrid. The company says this arrangement aims to encourage teamwork, innovation, and effective work delivery. The recent fine adds to ongoing discussions about working hours and workplace culture at Infosys.
Company founder Narayana Murthy has previously expressed views on work culture, suggesting Indian employees should be prepared to work longer hours to boost global competitiveness. He referenced China's 9-9-6 work schedule, which means working from 9am to 9pm, six days a week, totaling 72 hours. However, the French penalty is not about the number of hours worked, but about Infosys's ability to accurately record and monitor working hours according to French law.
India Today Tech has contacted Infosys for a statement and will provide updates if the company responds.
