Apple's MacBook Air is now affected by the global memory chip shortage, making it harder for customers to buy. Delivery estimates for new orders on Apple's official website now extend into mid-August or September. This development follows recent price increases for several MacBook and iPad models in India, with the 13-inch MacBook Air rising by up to Rs 30,000 and the 15-inch variant by up to Rs 35,000.
The shortage of memory chips has impacted Apple’s product availability worldwide. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the MacBook Air joins the Mac mini and Mac Studio in experiencing supply constraints. Retailers report growing difficulty in keeping the MacBook Air in stock, and some configurations now show delivery dates several weeks out.
Apple recently addressed the situation in a statement, noting the rapid increase in component prices. The company said, "We have never seen a component price increase this much, this quickly. We have shielded our customers from these increases so far, but we have now reached a point where we need to begin raising prices on a number of products, including today's increases for iPad and Mac."
The price hikes in India reflect these pressures, with significant increases for both the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models. The memory shortage has forced Apple to adjust pricing to account for higher production costs.
The global shortage is driven by increased demand for high-performance memory chips, especially from companies developing artificial intelligence hardware. Modern Macs and iPads now use more unified memory to support multitasking and advanced features like Apple Intelligence. As AI companies purchase large quantities of memory chips for data centers, worldwide prices have surged.
Manufacturers such as Apple are now paying more for memory components, and some of these costs are being passed on to consumers. The shortage has also led Apple to explore new supply options, including sourcing memory from Chinese manufacturers to help stabilize availability.
To manage the supply issues, Apple has taken several steps. Along with raising prices, the company has delayed its annual back-to-school promotion. For the first time, Apple has shifted much of its marketing focus to the base MacBook Pro instead of the MacBook Air. Some promotional materials now include a note stating, "MacBook Air subject to availability," underscoring the current supply challenges.
The ongoing memory chip shortage is expected to continue affecting MacBook Air availability and pricing in the near future. Customers looking to purchase the device may face delays and higher costs as Apple works to address the supply chain disruptions.
