Meta is preparing to launch a new AI agent called Hatch, aiming to compete directly with OpenAI and Anthropic. The company may price its premium Hatch version at up to $199.99 per month, matching the highest-tier plans from competitors. This move signals Meta’s intention to strengthen its position in the AI agent market, where it has lagged behind in large language models.
According to a report from The Information, Hatch is designed to perform tasks for users, such as coding projects or drafting presentations. Meta is considering a tiered pricing model, including a paid subscription called "Hatch Plus." This premium tier would offer between five and ten times more daily capacity than the free version. Token allowances would reset each billing cycle and would not carry over, following the approach of rival services.
Hatch is expected to let users describe tasks in plain language. The AI agent would then create software tools or perform actions like scheduling calendar events and sending emails. For example, a user could ask Hatch to build a fitness tracker, and the agent would generate the necessary tools.
Hatch may also include a customizable dashboard to display created tools, similar to the OpenClaw interface. Users could select from various capabilities, known as skills, and add modular features. These add-ons would allow Hatch to access tools, automate workflows, and interact with third-party services, such as creating travel itineraries.
Hatch is reportedly a consumer version of the OpenClaw AI agent tool, which can run locally on devices. Earlier this year, OpenClaw AI agents gained attention after calling for an AI uprising on an AI-only social platform. Meta has since acquired Moltbook, the company behind OpenClaw.
Test versions of Hatch have run on Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet models, but the final product is expected to use Meta’s own technology. Meta initially targeted a US launch in April. However, an internal memo from May suggests the company will first give access to about 10 companies, followed by a broader launch in July. This timeline may change as development continues.
Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has emphasized the company’s commitment to artificial intelligence. Meta is investing hundreds of billions of dollars in AI and recently reorganized its workforce, laying off about 8,000 employees and moving around 7,000 to AI-focused teams. Zuckerberg’s vision includes building AI agents for both businesses and individual users, aiming to deliver what he calls personal superintelligence.
Meta’s push into AI agents is part of a larger effort to create new revenue streams from its AI investments. On a recent earnings call, Zuckerberg stated that Meta’s goal is to deliver agents that understand user goals and work continuously to help achieve them. The company has also responded to privacy concerns by adjusting its internal programs used to train AI systems, including scaling back employee computer tracking.
