Furthermore, the business announced that, unlike the Windows 7 OS, its Windows 8.1 OS will not be supported by an Extended Security Update (ESU) programme. For customers who need to continue using specific legacy Microsoft products after their support has ended, the Extended Security Update (ESU) programme is their last resort. For a maximum of three years after the product's end of extended support date, it includes crucial security updates. In order to protect their computers and their data from cyber threats, Windows PC users who still use devices running the Windows 8.1 OS will no longer receive the essential security updates.

“Microsoft will not be offering an Extended Security Update (ESU) program for Windows 8.1. Continuing to use Windows 8.1 after January 10, 2023, may increase an organization’s exposure to security risks or impact its ability to meet compliance obligations,” the company wrote on the support page.

Microsoft will stop providing security updates for its Windows 7 operating system in addition to Windows 8.1. It is important to note that on January 14, 2020, Microsoft stopped providing technical and security updates for Windows 7. The Extended Security Update (ESU) programme for the operating, however, had been extended by the company. The ESU programme for Windows 7 will now be discontinued by the company on January 10, 2023.

It's important to note that computers with Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 operating systems will continue to function after January 10. They will, however, be more susceptible to malware, bugs, and other online security risks. Additionally, these PCs won't have access to the business's most recent features and functionalities.

Users of devices running Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 are advised by Microsoft to update to Windows 11 as soon as possible. Additionally, the company claims that it will "replace the device with one that supports Windows 11" if one of its products does not meet the technical requirements to run Windows 11.
