Despite significant advancements in mobile device hardware, batteries have not kept up with their increasing size. Honor's new battery technology, however, promises a 12.8% increase in energy density compared to current lithium batteries. During the keynote, Honor revealed that the Honor Magic 5 Pro, which has a 5,100 mAh capacity, could have had 5,450 mAh with the new technology. The battery offers approximately 240% more juice than regular Li-On batteries when its voltage reaches 3.5V, resulting in a 12.8% increase in the phone's total juice.
The new battery technology is currently only available in China, where the variant of the Magic5 Pro is listed with a 5,450 mAh capacity. It remains to be seen whether the new tech will be introduced in future global phones from the brand.
It's encouraging to see brands pushing the boundaries of innovation, as it has the potential to shape the future of the industry. Honor's silicon-carbon battery could be the start of a revolution, similar to Oppo's first fast-charging phone which is now a widely adopted feature. It remains to be seen whether other brands will follow suit.
