Brad Lightcap, OpenAI's former Chief Operating Officer, has announced his departure from the company. Lightcap, one of the longest-serving executives at OpenAI, revealed his decision to leave in a memo shared with employees and reposted on X. He described the move as “bittersweet” and expressed gratitude for his years at the company.
Lightcap joined OpenAI in 2018 and played a key role in its transformation from a small research lab to a major player in artificial intelligence. He was instrumental in building enterprise partnerships and securing deals that generated billions in revenue for OpenAI. Lightcap stated he plans to “start something new,” but did not provide further details about his next steps.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman responded to Lightcap’s announcement, thanking him for his contributions. Altman recalled early conversations with Lightcap about OpenAI’s mission, noting that Lightcap was among the few who understood the vision from the start. Altman credited Lightcap with handling multiple functions and challenges at the company, emphasizing that OpenAI would not be where it is today without his efforts.
Lightcap and Altman have a long professional history, including previous work together at startup accelerator Y Combinator. Before joining OpenAI, Lightcap worked at Dropbox and JP Morgan. At OpenAI, he initially served as chief financial officer for four years before becoming chief operating officer. In April, Lightcap transitioned to lead special projects, with chief revenue officer Denise Dresser assuming most COO responsibilities.
Under Lightcap’s leadership, OpenAI expanded its offerings to businesses worldwide. In 2018, the company had no enterprise products. Today, OpenAI has secured major deals with global companies, resulting in billions of dollars in revenue. Lightcap noted he helped build the first versions of several key teams, including Finance, Legal, People, Corporate Security, Go-to-Market, Government, and Partnerships.
OpenAI is currently valued at $852 billion and is expected to go public before the end of the year. The company may surpass a trillion-dollar valuation after its initial public offering. However, OpenAI has seen several high-profile departures ahead of the potential IPO. Lightcap’s exit follows those of AI ethics lead Chloe Bakalar and CEO of Applications Fidji Simo, who moved into an advisory role earlier this year. Head of safety Johannes Heidecke also left in July.
Lightcap concluded his message by reflecting on his time at OpenAI, stating that the relationships built during his tenure were especially meaningful. He emphasized his optimism for the company’s future, citing the talent and mission-driven focus of the team.
