OpenAI has launched its first hardware product, the Codex Micro keypad, after months of speculation. The device is designed for users of OpenAI’s coding platform, Codex, and was developed in partnership with accessories maker Work Louder. The launch comes amid legal scrutiny, with allegations of trade secret misuse, though OpenAI states there is no evidence supporting these claims.
The Codex Micro serves as a command center for managing AI agents on the Codex platform. It allows users to interact with AI agents without relying solely on a phone or desktop. The keypad features 13 mechanical switches, a touch sensor, a rotary encoder, and a planar joystick. RGB lighting is included, appealing to many technology enthusiasts.
The square device has light-up Agent Keys that indicate task status, Command Keys for common Codex actions, a joystick for launching workflows, and a dial to adjust an agent’s reasoning level. This dial controls how much time and computing power the agent uses for a task. The Codex Micro is available in two versions: "clicky" and "silent." OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noted the unexpected demand for the silent version.
Users can remap any key directly within Codex and swap them with 32 included icon keycaps. For further customization, the Work Louder Input software allows assignment of shortcuts to any key, the dial, or joystick movement, across six programmable layers. According to Work Louder co-founder Mike Di Genova, the Micro has six frosted keys that display a live view of Codex threads, using different colors to indicate if a task is idle, processing, complete, needs input, or has encountered an error.
The Codex Micro is likely a rebranded version of Work Louder’s Creator Micro 2 keypad. It supports both Bluetooth and USB-C connections and is compatible with Mac and Windows systems. The package includes the Codex Micro device, a USB-C to USB-C cable, and a Codex icon keyset.
The Codex Micro is priced at $230, or approximately Rs 22,000. It will be available for a limited time, but OpenAI has not disclosed the number of units in this limited-run collaboration. Pre-orders are currently open.
This keypad is separate from OpenAI’s broader hardware initiatives, which are led by former Apple chief designer Jony Ive. Reports suggest OpenAI is also developing a portable, screenless smart speaker with ChatGPT integration and moving mechanical parts. That product remains in development and may change before launch.
