Yong-In Park, the head of Samsung Electronics' System LSI business unit, revealed that the Galaxy S24 series will feature satellite connection, a major development in smartphone networking.
The show, which is scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2024, is expected to lay the way for future developments in smartphone connectivity.
Samsung stated at the 2023 Semiconductor Expo that it would like to allow smartphone communications via satellite, according to Yong-In Park. While no timeframe or phone type is mentioned specifically, this development represents a major breakthrough in mobile technology.
With the release of its Emergency SOS satellite function in 2022, Apple enabled non-terrestrial networks (NTN) communication. The iPhone 15 Pro Max and other recent models of the company's phones are compatible with this feature.
Although the Snapdragon Satellite support from Qualcomm was revealed earlier this year, the Samsung Galaxy S23 series does not have it enabled.
NTN connection is offered by Google's Tensor G2 and Tensor G3 CPUs and Samsung's Exynos 5300 modem. Concerning the Exynos 2400 chip, Samsung has not stated if it would enable satellite communication for the Galaxy S24 and S24+. The Galaxy S23 Ultra smartphone is also expected to run on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 CPU. The business community is excited about these changes.
Emergency satellite connectivity may not be available for Samsung's Galaxy S23 series handsets, which includes the Galaxy S23+, S23 Ultra, and Z Flip 5 devices.
According to TM Roh, head of Samsung's mobile experience business division, satellite functionality on smartphones was limited and the launch was early.
