Samsung is preparing to expand its foldable smartphone lineup with a new model that may carry the "Ultra" branding for the first time. Recent leaks indicate that the device, expected to launch as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, could feature a significant display upgrade. The wider variant seen in earlier leaks may simply be named the Galaxy Z Fold 8. This naming suggests Samsung plans to position the slimmer Ultra model as its most premium foldable device.
According to tipster Ice Universe, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will offer a "significantly enhanced" screen resolution. The information was shared on X, but no specific resolution figures were provided. It remains unclear whether the resolution boost will apply to the cover screen, the inner folding display, or both. This uncertainty has led to speculation, as Samsung's current foldables already feature high-resolution screens.
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 offers a cover screen resolution of 2,520 x 1,080 and an internal display resolution of 2,184 x 1,968. Notably, the cover screen is more pixel-dense than the larger inner display. This detail suggests the internal screen could benefit most from a resolution increase. However, Samsung may choose to upgrade both displays. While a higher-resolution display is impressive on paper, Samsung's foldable screens are already sharp, so the real-world impact may be modest. Still, buyers of premium foldables may appreciate further improvements.
The display is not the only area where the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra may see changes. Reports suggest the device could use Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset and include a 5,000mAh battery. Samsung may also focus on making the phone thinner, with rumors indicating it could measure around 4.1mm when unfolded. This would make it slimmer and lighter than previous models.
While details about the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra continue to surface, information about the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 remains limited. Its availability in some markets, such as Japan, is still uncertain. So far, only the Ultra model has reportedly appeared in official certification records. This supports speculation that Samsung is introducing a new premium tier in its foldable lineup.
Samsung is expected to hold its next Unpacked event in London on July 22. If reports are accurate, the company could announce the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, the Galaxy Z Fold 8, the Galaxy Z Flip 8, and other new devices at the event.
