After Wistron's $125 million sale of its whole interest, Tata Electronics took over Wistron's Indian unit, representing a major turning point in India's electronics manufacturing economy.
According to Wistron's board meeting on October 27, Tata becomes the first Indian business to produce iPhones, establishing its position as the first in the global electronics manufacturing sector.
Within 2.5 years, the Tata Group plans to start producing iPhones in India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. Both local and international markets will sell Apple products that are "Made in India."
A major turning point in the current process has been reached when Wistron approved its subsidiaries in Singapore and Hong Kong to sign a share purchase agreement with Tata Electronics Private Limited. Following completion, the agreement will move forward to obtain further approvals and formalize the acquisition.
Tata and Wistron are in talks to buy Wistron's operation, and an August completion date is possible. But there has been a few-month delay in the plan. Tata's calculated action entails employing the Wistron-run plant that is currently located close to Bengaluru to assemble iPhones in India.
