In a major development, Twitter CEO Elon Musk has revealed that verified accounts will now be given priority on the platform. This announcement comes just a week after Twitter removed blue ticks from accounts that had not subscribed to Twitter Blue. The blue tick verification system was first introduced in 2009 to help users identify genuine accounts of celebrities, politicians, companies, and brands. However, the verification was free until last year when Musk launched Twitter Blue, which includes the blue check-mark badge.
Last week, Twitter removed verification badges from several Indian celebrities and top politicians, including Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. However, after facing backlash, Twitter reinstated the badges for celebrities like Bill Gates, Donald Trump, and Virat Kohli, among others.
As per reports, Twitter has received only 28 new sign-ups for its payment service, Twitter Blue, since April 20 when it removed blue verification badges from some accounts. The service has over 385,000 mobile customers worldwide, with the largest number of customers in the US. It remains to be seen whether the priority given to verified accounts will encourage more users to subscribe to Twitter Blue.
