Samsung has introduced its next-generation UFS 5.0 storage standard, offering up to twice the speed of the current UFS 4.1 solution. The company states that the new technology will reduce latency and improve response times, especially for on-device large language models (LLMs).
The UFS 5.0 standard is built on JEDEC's latest embedded storage interface specification. Samsung reports that UFS 5.0 delivers sequential read speeds of up to 10.8GB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 9.8GB/s. These speeds mark a significant improvement over UFS 4.1, which the company says makes UFS 5.0 up to twice as fast as its predecessor.
In addition to speed, Samsung highlights the improved power efficiency of UFS 5.0. The new storage solution is more than 40% more power efficient than UFS 4.1. The physical package is also smaller, with a reduction in size of 16.7 percent compared to the previous generation.
Samsung plans to begin mass production of UFS 5.0 in the fourth quarter of this year. The storage will be available in capacities of up to 1TB. The company expects the new standard to play a key role in supporting advanced mobile applications and devices that require high-speed data processing and efficient power use.
With the introduction of UFS 5.0, Samsung aims to address the growing demand for faster and more efficient storage in mobile devices. The enhanced performance and reduced size may also benefit device manufacturers looking to optimize space and battery life in future products.
