Apple iPhone 18 Pro and Duo Launch in India: Price Hikes, Market Impact, and Consumer Trends

[Apple’s latest iPhone launches bring steep price hikes in India, with the iPhone 18 Pro and first foldable iPhone Duo debuting at premium prices.]

Apple iPhone 18 Pro price in India jumps 20%, iPhone Duo debuts as costliest iPhone yet

Apple has announced the launch of its latest Pro iPhones and its first foldable device, the iPhone Duo, at the Surprise and Shine event at Apple Park. The new iPhone 18 Pro starts at Rs 1,64,900 in India, marking a Rs 30,000 increase from the iPhone 17 Pro's starting price of Rs 1,34,900. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is now priced at Rs 1,79,900, up from Rs 1,49,900 for the previous model. The iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable, debuts at Rs 2,99,900, with higher storage variants reaching Rs 4,49,900.

Key Highlights

  • Apple launched iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo with significant price hikes in India
  • iPhone 18 Pro starts at Rs 1,64,900, up 20 percent from last year
  • iPhone Duo priced at Rs 2,99,900 in India, much higher than in the US
  • Import duties, GST, and currency impact contribute to higher Indian prices
  • Refurbished iPhones expected to see increased demand after new price hikes

Price Increases and Contributing Factors

The price hikes for the new iPhones are driven by rising memory and component costs. Apple has not fully absorbed these increases, especially for the Pro models. Prabhu Ram, VP at CyberMedia Research, notes that the 20–22 percent price increase for the Pro series is higher than in recent years. The introduction of the 2nm A20 Pro chipset gives Apple more flexibility to set higher prices, helping the company recover increased production costs.

India has seen steeper price increases compared to other markets. While the iPhone 18 Pro's price rose by Rs 30,000 in India, the US saw only a $100 increase, or about Rs 9,500. Older models, such as the iPhone 16 and iPhone 17, have also become more expensive. Independent analyst Yogesh Brar reports that some iPhone prices in India have risen by up to 41 percent, compared to 10 to 21 percent in the US. Factors behind this disparity include higher memory and storage costs, a weaker rupee, 18 percent GST, and import duties.

Impact of Import Duties and Market Dynamics

The iPhone Duo's high price in India is partly due to import duties and taxes, as initial units will not be manufactured locally. Tarun Pathak, research director at Counterpoint, explains that imported units face a total cost increase of over 40 percent, including 17 percent import duty, 18 percent GST, and currency exchange impacts. In comparison, the iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 (about Rs 1,90,000) in the US, making it significantly cheaper in other regions like Thailand and the UAE.

This price gap may encourage the growth of a grey market for iPhones in India. Kailash Lakhyani, founder chairman of AIMRA, warns that the difference could lead to loss of business for Apple India and reduced government revenue.

Sales Outlook and Consumer Behavior

Apple's steep India-specific price hikes on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo — driven by rising costs, GST, and import duties — may dent sales volume and fuel grey-market and refurbished-phone demand. But with Pro buyers largely price-insensitive and festive-season demand strong, Apple's revenue is likely to hold steady even as growth slows.
