Meta is developing new personalised AI agents to help automate everyday tasks for its more than 3 billion users. This move comes as Meta invests billions of dollars in artificial intelligence and implements workforce changes, including layoffs affecting about 10 percent of its global staff.
According to a Financial Times report, Meta's AI agents aim to handle daily activities for users. The company is testing these agents internally with select staff. These agents are expected to be similar to OpenClaw, an AI platform that gained attention earlier in the year for its AI-only social media presence. However, unlike OpenClaw, which can use various AI models, Meta's agents will run on a proprietary model developed by its Superintelligence Labs, led by Alexandr Wang.
Users will likely be able to assign tasks to their AI agents, who will complete them in the background. It remains unclear if these agents will operate locally on devices or through cloud-based systems, similar to Anthropic’s Claude. Meta reportedly wants users to trust these agents with sensitive information, including health and financial data.
Meta's focus on AI extends beyond personal agents. The company plans to introduce an agentic shopping tool on Instagram, targeting a launch before the fourth quarter of this year. This tool will use AI to enhance the shopping experience for users.
Internally, Meta is also leveraging AI for organisational purposes. Mark Zuckerberg reportedly has an AI avatar that employees can interact with. The company has announced plans to track employee mouse movements and keystrokes to improve AI training and workplace efficiency.
Meta recently increased its capital expenditure by $10 billion, bringing the total to $145 billion for the year, with a significant portion allocated to AI development. This announcement led to a nearly $170 billion drop in Meta’s market capitalization, reflecting investor caution. The company also attempted to acquire Chinese AI startup Manus AI for $2 billion, highlighting its aggressive AI expansion strategy.
Meta's AI ambitions come amid broader industry trends. Competitors like Anthropic are developing AI agents for finance and banking. Privacy concerns remain, especially as Meta encourages users to share sensitive data with its AI systems. The company has faced scrutiny in the past over alleged privacy violations on its platforms.
As Meta continues to ramp up its AI initiatives, the impact on users, employees, and the broader tech industry remains significant. The company’s efforts signal a major shift toward integrating AI into daily digital experiences and workplace operations.
