The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design, launched in September as the first mass-market triple-foldable smartphone, has garnered attention for its innovative features and design. However, a recent durability test conducted by popular YouTuber Zack Nelson, known as JerryRigEverything, has raised significant concerns about the device's resilience.
The Mate XT boasts a remarkable Z-style folding mechanism, allowing users to unfold three screens seamlessly into a compact form. It is equipped with a 10.2-inch inner display, which offers an immersive viewing experience. Available in striking colorways such as Dark Black and Rui Red, this smartphone is not just a technological marvel but also a stylish accessory.
Despite its premium design, the durability test revealed that the Mate XT is vulnerable to scratches. The screen began to show noticeable scratches at level two on the Mohs hardness scale, a common benchmark for measuring mineral hardness.
Furthermore, deeper grooves appeared at level three when subjected to a razor blade. While these findings are not unprecedented for foldable devices—similar results were observed with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6—the Mate XT’s screen exhibited a troubling tendency to attract scratches from everyday objects, particularly fingernails. These scratches became more apparent when the display was turned off, indicating a higher susceptibility to damage compared to other models.
The Mate XT comes with a hefty price tag, starting at CNY 19,999 (approximately ₹2,36,700), positioning it among the most expensive smartphones on the market. Buyers receive a comprehensive package that includes a carbon fiber case, a 66W power adapter with two USB Type-C cables, an 88W-rated car charger, and Huawei FreeBuds 5.
As a flagship device, the Huawei Mate XT promises cutting-edge technology and innovative design, yet potential owners should exercise caution. The exposed edges of the screen when folded, coupled with its susceptibility to scratches, suggest that this high-end smartphone requires careful handling. For those considering the Mate XT, being aware of its durability limitations is essential for ensuring its longevity in daily use.
