Qualcomm unveils new Snapdragon flagship chips

Qualcomm has unveiled two new flagship smartphone platforms, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, at Snapdragon Summit 2026. Both are built around a 2nm process and place on-device agentic AI at the centre of Qualcomm’s latest mobile strategy.

Qualcomm has expanded its premium mobile portfolio with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. Announced at Snapdragon Summit 2026 in Maui, the two platforms are designed to bring higher performance and more advanced on-device intelligence to upcoming flagship Android smartphones.

Both platforms are based on an advanced 2nm process and use Qualcomm’s custom Oryon CPU, Adreno GPU and Hexagon NPU. The Extreme model is positioned as Qualcomm’s most powerful mobile platform, while the standard Gen 6 is intended to bring many of the same AI, gaming, imaging and connectivity capabilities to a wider range of premium devices.

5GHz CPU and stronger performance headline upgrades

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series introduces Oryon CPU cores capable of reaching 5GHz. Qualcomm lists two prime cores running at up to 5GHz, while the Extreme platform also claims a 13% CPU performance improvement over the previous generation.

Graphics also receive a major overhaul. The Extreme version features Adreno Neural Fusion and dedicated Adreno matrix cores for AI-assisted rendering, including super resolution, frame generation and advanced image reconstruction. Qualcomm says its GPU delivers up to a 44% performance increase alongside a 40% improvement in power efficiency compared with the previous generation.

Agentic AI moves further onto smartphones

AI is a central focus of the new Snapdragon platforms. Qualcomm says the chips are designed for personalised, on-device AI agents that can understand context, learn usage patterns and perform tasks without requiring constant prompts.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6’s sensing hub can support models of up to 200 million parameters for functions such as personalisation and voice-related experiences. The Extreme variant takes this considerably further by supporting a 30-billion-parameter Mixture-of-Experts model locally, according to Qualcomm and TechCrunch.

The Extreme platform also adds AI-powered camera and video capabilities, including Advanced Professional Video support and Intelligent Pixel Control. It supports 8K video capture at 60fps and 4K recording at 240fps.

Flagship phones from major brands are coming

Qualcomm says smartphones powered by the new Snapdragon platforms will arrive from HONOR, iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, OPPO, REDMI, RedMagic, vivo and Xiaomi.

The launch positions the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 as key platforms for the next wave of premium smartphones, combining 2nm processing, high-frequency Oryon CPUs, AI-enhanced graphics, local AI processing and upgraded connectivity.
