Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has publicly opposed calls to slow down artificial intelligence (AI) development. This stance puts him at odds with leaders from OpenAI and Anthropic, who have urged for more regulation and collaboration to ensure AI safety. Zuckerberg insists that each company should independently ensure the safety of its AI models.
Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, recently suggested that AI companies should work together to slow down development for safety reasons. OpenAI's Sam Altman agreed with this approach. However, Zuckerberg disagrees, stating that companies already have both the responsibility and incentive to train models safely. He emphasized that Meta delayed the release of its Muse AI agent due to safety concerns, acting without waiting for others to do the same.
"Every lab has the responsibility and incentive to move at the pace required to train its models safely, and the ability to take its own actions to ensure that happens," Zuckerberg wrote on X. He explained that Meta's decision to delay Muse AI was made independently, as part of routine operations, because it was the right choice for users and the company.
This position contrasts with calls from Sam Altman and Dario Amodei for regulatory frameworks to oversee AI development. Elon Musk has also supported the idea of regulation to prevent unchecked AI progress. The debate intensified after former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon warned that AI could potentially end humanity.
Zuckerberg also addressed the idea of US government intervention in AI development. He argued that any policy slowing American AI model releases, even briefly, could harm US leadership and allow foreign competitors to advance. In a previous essay, he stated, "Any policy that slows American model releases -- even by a month -- could add significant risk to American leadership while letting foreign models race ahead."
This perspective aligns Zuckerberg with former US President Donald Trump, who opposes slowing down American AI research due to concerns about competition with China. Trump recently stated, "Whoever wins AI, wins." Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang supported this view in a conversation with Trump, agreeing that the US should not fall behind in AI development.
David Sacks, a technology investor, also criticized OpenAI and Anthropic for suggesting a slowdown. He argued that these companies already dominate the frontier of AI research and could choose to slow their own progress without requiring industry-wide action.
Despite his opposition to regulation, Zuckerberg acknowledged the importance of safety and accountability. He noted that AI companies face significant liability if their models cause harm, providing a strong incentive to prioritize safety. Zuckerberg also supported the use of independent evaluators and advisors, stating that Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) already employs such measures to improve outcomes.
Zuckerberg concluded that maintaining the right balance of power is key to building a positive future with AI. His comments mark his first public intervention in the ongoing debate about how to address rising concerns over AI safety.
Meanwhile, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has admitted that the industry may have misrepresented AI risks. Anthropic safety researcher Evan Hubinger has predicted that AI could end humanity within the next decade, while OpenAI's Marcus Williams warned of a possible doomsday scenario within three years.
