India does not yet have an AI model that matches Anthropic’s Claude or OpenAI’s GPT. However, Indian IT companies are shifting focus to help global businesses adopt AI at scale. Wipro announced on Tuesday that it has established a Center of Excellence (CoE) for applied AI at its Bengaluru hub, dedicated to Anthropic’s Claude models.
This move highlights India’s evolving role in the global AI landscape. While the country is not building leading AI models, its largest technology firms are positioning themselves as experts in deploying these models across industries. Wipro’s new CoE aims to strengthen its ability to scale enterprise AI adoption using Claude models.
The CoE will integrate Claude’s capabilities across the Wipro Intelligence stack. This includes delivery, functional, and industry platforms. The goal is to embed AI into core business workflows in various sectors. The center will also support Wipro in developing AI-based platforms and industry tools.
Wipro plans to expand the use of AI across its finance, human resources, and sales teams. The company announced it will train 10,000 employees to use Anthropic’s Claude models over the next 18 months. This training program is designed to build a strong base of practitioners. These employees will be capable of designing, deploying, and operating AI-enabled systems in complex enterprise settings.
Wipro’s announcement comes during a major transition for India’s IT industry. Investors are increasingly concerned that AI tools could disrupt the sector’s labor-intensive business model. India’s IT industry is valued at $315 billion. For years, companies grew by deploying large teams of engineers and consultants for clients worldwide. Now, AI is automating many of these tasks, raising questions about future growth strategies.
AI-led automation has begun to pressure the revenue of traditional Indian IT services firms. In February, these firms lost billions of dollars in market value, partly after Anthropic launched an AI agent tool. Wipro’s move reflects the need to adapt to these changes by focusing on AI deployment and expertise.
Wipro is not the only company investing in Anthropic’s technology. On June 11, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) announced a partnership with Anthropic. TCS will equip 50,000 associates with Claude models. The two companies will also jointly market AI solutions for highly regulated sectors. This alliance aims to drive enterprise AI scaling and strengthen TCS’s position in the global AI market.
India’s IT giants are not competing directly with leading AI model developers. Instead, they are focusing on becoming leaders in deploying and integrating advanced AI models for businesses worldwide. These efforts are expected to shape the future of India’s technology sector as it navigates the challenges and opportunities presented by AI.
