Apple has reportedly cancelled plans for a successor to its Vision Pro headset. The company is now shifting its focus to developing two smart glasses models, according to recent reports. Images have surfaced online showing a possible black version of the Vision Pro, but it is unclear if this variant will ever be released. The images may represent a prototype that Apple has since abandoned.
Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has updated his roadmap for Apple’s wearable devices. He originally predicted a new Vision Pro model, but now states that Apple has cancelled further development of the Vision Pro line. The decision reportedly comes from John Ternus, who is expected to become Apple’s next CEO. Ternus has chosen to prioritize smart glasses, which are believed to have greater mass-market potential.
The Vision Pro, which launched in white, was Apple’s first mixed-reality headset. The company appears to be moving away from this product category. Instead, Apple will focus on smart glasses that are expected to be more affordable and appeal to a wider audience.
Apple is now working on two types of smart glasses. The first model will not include a display and is expected to launch next year. This device will compete directly with the screen-less Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses. The second model, featuring optical waveguides, is now scheduled for release in 2029. This timeline represents a delay from earlier expectations.
The shift in strategy suggests Apple sees more promise in smart glasses than in high-end mixed-reality headsets. The new products are likely to be less expensive than the Vision Pro, making them accessible to a broader range of consumers.
Apple’s decision to cancel the Vision Pro successor and focus on smart glasses could impact the wearable technology market. The move aligns with trends toward lighter, more affordable wearable devices. By targeting the mass market, Apple aims to compete with other companies offering smart glasses, such as Meta.
It remains uncertain if the black Vision Pro headset seen in leaked images will ever reach consumers. For now, Apple’s attention is on developing its upcoming smart glasses lineup.
