Former Hinge CEO Justin McLeod has launched a new AI-powered matchmaking service called Overtone. The startup has secured $18 million in funding and aims to change how people find relationships. Overtone will use artificial intelligence to introduce users only when it detects a strong potential for a meaningful connection.
Overtone plans to eliminate traditional dating app features like profiles, swiping, and multiple chats. Instead, it will focus on curated introductions based on users' personalities, values, and relationship goals. The AI will interact with users through conversations, listening to their voices to understand who they are and what they seek in a partner.
Backing for Overtone comes from FirstMark Capital, Pace Capital, and Match Group. Match Group is the company behind popular dating platforms such as Hinge, Tinder, and OkCupid. Overtone is expected to launch later this year in select locations.
McLeod believes the current dating app model is no longer effective for many users. He points to widespread dating app fatigue, where people tire of endless swiping, matching, and chatting without meaningful results. Overtone seeks to address this by removing the need for users to create detailed profiles or select ideal photos.
The AI will only introduce users when it believes there is a genuine chance for a strong connection. Overtone also plans to explain to users why it matched them, offering transparency about compatibility. This approach aims to reduce uncertainty and frustration common in online dating.
The concept behind Overtone resembles the matchmaking system featured in the "Hang the DJ" episode of Black Mirror. In the show, an AI determines who should date, though Overtone does not assign relationship expiry dates or run secret simulations. Instead, it uses technology to make introductions, not decisions about the future of relationships.
McLeod emphasizes that Overtone will not let AI date on users' behalf. The service is designed to act as a matchmaker, supporting but not replacing human interaction. He states that real relationships still require vulnerability, effort, and genuine connection. AI will work in the background to facilitate better introductions, but people remain responsible for building relationships.
Overtone's launch signals a shift in how technology can support dating. By focusing on meaningful introductions and reducing the burden of traditional app features, the company hopes to improve the online dating experience for users seeking real connections.
