Meta has launched new subscription plans for its AI chatbot and social media apps, aiming to generate direct revenue from its AI technology. The company announced global subscription options for Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, alongside new paid tiers for its Meta AI chatbot platform. These offerings will operate under the broader Meta One brand.
Meta AI subscriptions will start at $7.99 per month. The first tier, Meta One Plus, costs $7.99 (about Rs 775) monthly and targets users who generate images, videos, or require extended reasoning from the chatbot. The higher tier, Meta One Premium, is priced at $19.99 (about Rs 1,939) per month. This plan includes all features of the lower tier but provides much higher usage limits.
Meta will begin testing these AI plans next month in Singapore, Guatemala, and Bolivia. The company expects to expand to more countries later. Meta has not disclosed the exact usage limits for either tier but stated that the Premium plan offers “meaningfully more usage.”
Users can still access Meta AI for free for basic tasks like image and video generation. However, heavy users will encounter usage caps unless they subscribe to a paid plan.
Meta’s new pricing positions it against established AI subscription services from Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic, all of which offer paid plans in India.
Google provides three AI subscription tiers. The Google AI Plus plan, with double the free usage, costs Rs 399 per month. The Google AI Pro plan is priced at Rs 1,950 per month and adds higher usage limits, coding tools, and advanced AI features. The top-tier Google AI Ultra plan costs Rs 6,500 per month and includes up to 20TB of cloud storage.
OpenAI also offers three paid plans in India. The entry-level plan costs Rs 399 per month. The advanced plan, at Rs 1,999 per month, includes coding tools and advanced image generation. The highest-tier subscription is Rs 10,699 per month, targeting users who need maximum productivity and premium AI capabilities.
Anthropic’s Claude AI is available through two paid plans. The Claude Pro plan starts at $17 (about Rs 1,634) per month and includes Claude Code and Claude Cowork. The top-tier Max plan starts at $100 (about Rs 9,700) per month and provides nearly 20 times higher usage limits.
Meta’s move to introduce subscriptions comes as it invests heavily in AI infrastructure. Mark Zuckerberg has pledged to spend at least $600 billion on AI infrastructure over the next few years. The company is also building a data centre in Louisiana, expected to cost at least $200 billion.
These investments raise questions about the return on such large expenditures. Investors are looking at recurring subscriptions as a way for tech companies to recover some of these costs. Meta has stated that its AI investments have already improved its advertising systems. However, the company is now seeking additional revenue streams to offset the rising costs of advanced AI development.
