Samsung has announced Flex Titanium, a new display technology for its upcoming Galaxy Z Fold series. This innovation aims to make foldable smartphones slimmer, tougher, and more resistant to wear. The Flex Titanium design follows the third-generation Armor FlexHinge, which was 27% thinner and 43% lighter than the hinge in the Z Fold6.
Flex Titanium features two main components: a titanium alloy film and a flexible titanium plate. The titanium alloy film is extremely thin, measuring only one-third the thickness of a human hair. Despite its thinness, it is reportedly 20 times stiffer than the polymer film used in earlier models. This film sits beneath the OLED panel and supports the display as it flexes.
Beneath the film is the titanium plate, which supports the entire display panel. This plate helps create a flatter and more uniform surface. Samsung first introduced the titanium plate with the Z Fold7. Engineers have now reduced air gaps between the display and the supporting plate, resulting in a tighter bond and improved durability.
Samsung has also added micro-patterned holes to the folding section of the titanium plate. This design secures flexibility while maintaining strength. According to Kyung-Jin Yoo, Corporate EVP and Head of Mobile Display Product Development Team at Samsung Display, the company is combining high-resolution display architecture with new organic materials to maximize power efficiency and strengthen its foldable devices.
The Flex Titanium design builds on seven generations of Galaxy foldable innovations. Samsung has incorporated user feedback to focus on durability, slimness, and display quality. Titanium is a strong yet lightweight material, making it suitable for foldable devices, though it presents engineering challenges when used in thin, flexible structures.
Flex Titanium aims to minimize the crease in foldable displays and improve resistance to external shocks. The technology is designed to withstand the repeated folding and unfolding that occurs over hundreds of thousands of cycles.
Samsung will showcase Flex Titanium and a new foldable form factor at the upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event in London. The event's tagline, "A New Shape Unfolds," hints at a wide book-style foldable device. This new model is expected to sit between the Z Flip and Z Fold in terms of design.
