Recent reports indicate that US authorities accessed Signal messages from a seized iPhone, raising privacy concerns. The incident did not involve a breach of Signal’s end-to-end encryption. Instead, investigators retrieved message content from notification data stored on the device, even after the Signal app was deleted and messages were set to disappear.
Authorities accessed message content by examining notifications saved on the iPhone. This occurred because iOS stores notification previews in its system database. If message previews are enabled, sensitive information may be visible even if the app is removed or messages have disappeared.
The situation led to confusion among users, with some believing Signal’s encryption had failed. However, the core encryption of Signal remains intact. The exposure happened due to how iOS manages notification previews, not because of a flaw in Signal’s security protocols.
Meredith Whittaker, President of Signal, clarified that the company’s encryption remains secure. She explained that the issue relates to iOS notification handling, not Signal’s infrastructure. Whittaker also stated that Signal has raised concerns with Apple about the retention of notification data, particularly for deleted messages.
Signal recommends users take advantage of existing privacy settings. iPhone users can prevent message previews from appearing in notifications by adjusting settings within the Signal app. By hiding both sender names and message content in notifications, users can reduce the risk of sensitive data exposure if their device is accessed by others.
To enhance privacy, users should navigate to Signal’s notification settings and select the option to hide all message details. This measure helps ensure that even if a device is seized or accessed without permission, message content will not be visible in the notification database.
The incident highlights the importance of understanding how device-level settings can impact data privacy. While Signal’s encryption remains robust, users must also consider how their devices handle notifications and stored data.
