WhatsApp launches prepaid mobile recharge in India via PayU. Learn how to recharge Jio, Airtel, and Vi numbers directly using the new rupee icon on WhatsApp.

WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that allows users to recharge prepaid mobile numbers directly within the app. This update aims to simplify the mobile recharge process for millions of users in India. The feature is currently rolling out in phases for both Android and iOS platforms.

Key Highlights

  • WhatsApp now allows prepaid mobile recharges directly within the app for Android and iOS users
  • Feature supports Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea with payments via UPI, debit, or credit cards
  • Recharge option is found under the ₹ icon, serving as a hub for payments and services
  • PayU processes all transactions, and refunds are handled within a few business days if needed

New Recharge Feature Details

With this new feature, WhatsApp users no longer need to switch between different apps to recharge their prepaid numbers. The service supports major telecom operators, including Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea. Users can make payments using UPI, debit cards, or credit cards.

The recharge option is accessible through the ₹ icon on the WhatsApp home screen. This icon serves as a central hub for payments, recharges, bill payments, and metro ticketing. WhatsApp has partnered with PayU, a transaction processing platform, to support these transactions.

Transaction Process and Support

After completing a recharge, users receive a confirmation screen with plan details. All transactions are recorded in the payment history section within the app. According to WhatsApp's FAQ page, completed recharges cannot be cancelled or reversed.

If a transaction fails but money is deducted, refunds are processed within a few business days. In case of delays, users can contact PayU support for assistance. This ensures users have access to help if issues arise during the recharge process.

Availability and Rollout

The prepaid recharge feature is being introduced gradually to users across India. Both Android and iOS users will receive the update as part of a phased rollout. WhatsApp aims to provide a seamless experience for managing mobile recharges and other payments within the app.
