Meta has introduced Muse Image, a new AI image generator developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). The tool, internally called Mango, is now available for free on the Meta AI app, WhatsApp, and Instagram. However, the launch has raised immediate privacy concerns among users and experts.
Muse Image allows users to create AI-generated images by tagging public Instagram accounts in prompts. This means anyone can generate images that include another user, provided their Instagram account is public. Meta states that users will receive notifications when their content is used in this way. Users can opt out through account settings or by switching their account to private. However, images already generated will not be deleted if a user changes their privacy settings.
The tool supports a range of features similar to other AI image generators. Users can generate cartoon-style images, edit photos with prompts, and create complex visuals such as invitations or postcards. Muse Image also enables the creation of QR codes within images. The tool is currently available for Instagram Stories, direct messages on WhatsApp, and the Meta AI app. Meta plans to expand access to Facebook, Messenger, and more areas of Instagram and WhatsApp later this year.
Muse Image powers 30 new AI effects for Instagram Stories in the United States. These effects include customizable filters that can alter existing photos. Users can choose from preset prompts or write their own to generate images. The tool is free to use, but users who exceed a usage limit must wait for a reset or subscribe to Meta One for continued access.
The ability to tag public Instagram accounts for image generation has sparked debate online. Critics argue that allowing real users to appear in generated images without explicit consent poses significant privacy risks. Meta’s policy confirms that public Instagram content may be used in AI features, but users retain some control through notification and opt-out options.
This is not the first time Meta has faced scrutiny over privacy practices. In 2019, Meta paid a record US$5 billion fine to the US Federal Trade Commission after the Cambridge Analytica scandal. In 2021, Meta shut down Facebook’s facial-recognition system following regulatory pressure and lawsuits related to biometric data collection. The company also faces ongoing legal challenges over alleged harms to young Instagram users.
Muse Image ranks second on the Arena Elo leaderboard for text-to-image, single-image editing, and multi-image editing, just behind OpenAI’s GPT Image 2. The tool works with Muse Spark, Meta’s AI agent, which can interpret prompts, search the web, and plan before generating images. Meta is also developing Muse Video, an AI video generator currently ranked third for text-to-video tasks.
Meta intends to use Muse Image for business and advertising. The model will support image generation for advertisers within Advantage Plus, helping brands create marketing materials and automate campaign tasks. Advertisers and agencies will soon see image variants powered by Muse Image in their workflows.
