Thousands of Meta employees worldwide received layoff notifications on Wednesday, coinciding with the leak of an internal audio recording. In the recording, Mark Zuckerberg reportedly explains why Meta has begun tracking employee computer activity, stating that the company aims to use this data to train its artificial intelligence systems.
The leaked audio surfaced during a period of heightened anxiety at Meta due to ongoing layoffs. In the recording, Zuckerberg addresses questions about the company’s decision to install tracking software on employee computers in the United States. This software reportedly captures mouse movements, clicks, and keystrokes. Employees, already concerned about job security, raised privacy questions during an all-hands meeting.
During the meeting, an employee asked Zuckerberg to clarify the purpose behind monitoring workers’ computers. Zuckerberg allegedly responded that modern AI models improve by observing skilled individuals performing real-world tasks. He stated, “The AI models learn from watching really smart people do things.”
According to the leaked audio, Zuckerberg argued that Meta’s employees are more capable than external contractors typically used for AI training. He suggested that by analyzing how Meta engineers code and solve problems, the company’s AI systems could advance more rapidly. Zuckerberg reportedly said, “The average intelligence of the people who are at this company is significantly higher than the average set of people that you can get to do tasks.”
He further explained that if Meta wants to improve its AI’s coding abilities, it makes sense to have internal staff build tools and solve tasks that can teach the model. This approach, he claimed, could enhance the model’s capabilities faster than competitors in the industry.
The leaked comments come as Meta intensifies efforts to compete in the global AI sector while reducing its workforce. The layoffs are part of a restructuring plan aimed at cutting costs and boosting efficiency, even as the company invests billions of dollars in artificial intelligence development.
Recent reports indicate that the latest round of job cuts could impact nearly 10 percent of Meta’s global workforce, or about 8,000 employees. According to Bloomberg, Meta began notifying affected workers early Wednesday, with employees at its Singapore office among the first to receive emails at around 4 a.m. local time. Teams in Europe and the United States were also expected to receive notifications throughout the day.
India Today Tech has not independently verified the authenticity of the leaked audio. The incident has sparked debate about privacy and the use of employee data for AI training as Meta continues its push into artificial intelligence.
