OpenAI has announced significant price reductions for its flagship AI models, aiming to stay competitive in a rapidly evolving market. CEO Sam Altman revealed that the company is lowering prices for two models in the GPT-5.6 family—GPT-5.6 Luna and GPT-5.6 Terra. The announcement comes as OpenAI faces increasing competition from Chinese open-weight models and other global AI firms.

Key Highlights

  • OpenAI reduces GPT-5.6 Luna price by 80 percent to $0.20 per million input tokens.
  • GPT-5.6 Terra now costs $2 per million input tokens after a 20 percent price cut.
  • Kimi K3 remains a key competitor with open-weight access and competitive pricing.
  • OpenAI introduces fast mode for GPT-5.6 Sol, offering up to 2.5x speed for double the price.
  • Efficiency improvements have lowered OpenAI's serving costs by 20 percent.

Details of the Price Reductions

Sam Altman shared the update on X, stating, "Major price cuts today: 80 percent drop for GPT-5.6 Luna, now $0.20 (roughly Rs 20) per million input tokens and $1.20 (roughly Rs 115) per million output." For GPT-5.6 Terra, the price has dropped by 20 percent, now costing $2 (roughly Rs 191) per million input tokens and $12 (roughly Rs 1,150) per million output tokens. These new prices make Luna and Terra more affordable than Kimi K3, the largest open-weight AI model currently available.

Kimi K3 is priced at $3 (roughly Rs 287) per million input tokens and $15 (roughly Rs 1,436) per million output tokens. Since its launch, Kimi K3 has gained attention for matching the performance of models like GPT-5.6 Sol and Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 in some tasks, but at a lower cost.

New Features and Efficiency Improvements

OpenAI is not only reducing costs but also enhancing performance. The company has introduced a fast mode for GPT-5.6 Sol, its most advanced AI model. According to Altman, "GPT-5.6 Sol gets Fast mode in the API, up to 2.5x the speed for 2x the price, same intelligence." This feature allows users to receive faster responses from Sol, though it comes at double the standard price.

OpenAI has also improved the efficiency of its models. After deploying GPT-5.6 Sol, the company used the model to optimize its own operations. This resulted in a 20 percent reduction in serving costs and over 15 percent better token-generation efficiency.

Industry Context and Competitive Landscape

The price cuts reflect a broader trend as enterprises become more cost-sensitive with AI investments. As AI-related expenses have grown, sometimes reaching billions of dollars, businesses are seeking to manage spending more carefully. OpenAI and other US-based AI labs are also responding to pressure from Chinese open-weight models, which can be downloaded, modified, and run on a company's own infrastructure. For example, Kimi K3's weights are available for developers to run and customize locally.

OpenAI's latest pricing strategy adds pressure on competitors such as Anthropic and Google, who have also introduced more cost-effective AI models. Meta and xAI have recently launched their own efficient models. This shift may signal the start of a price war among leading AI companies as they compete for enterprise customers.
