OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Work, a new AI agent designed to automate workplace tasks across various platforms and applications. The announcement comes as competition intensifies between OpenAI and Anthropic, whose Claude Cowork tool previously impacted Indian IT stocks such as TCS and Infosys due to its automation capabilities.

Key Highlights

  • OpenAI launches ChatGPT Work to automate tasks across apps and workflows.
  • ChatGPT Work uses the advanced GPT-5.6 model and Codex technology.
  • Three new GPT-5.6 models—Sol, Terra, Luna—are now available to the public.
  • ChatGPT Work integrates with Slack, Teams, Google Drive, and other tools.
  • Desktop app with Work and Codex features now available globally for Windows and macOS.

ChatGPT Work Features and Capabilities

ChatGPT Work operates within ChatGPT and is powered by the advanced GPT-5.6 model, utilizing OpenAI’s Codex technology. The AI agent can access and process information from connected services to produce finished work, including documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, web pages, and websites.

Unlike earlier versions, ChatGPT Work can break down large tasks into smaller steps and operate across web, desktop, and mobile platforms. Users can assign tasks to the AI agent from their smartphones, allowing continuous progress even while away from their desks. The agent can resume tasks on desktop, where it can also access local files and applications.

ChatGPT Work integrates with tools such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, SharePoint, email, calendars, CRM systems, and project trackers through plugins. The AI can select the appropriate app based on user prompts or follow direct instructions. It can automate recurring tasks, such as checking Slack updates, reviewing dashboards, monitoring customer feedback, and updating presentations when new feedback arrives by email.

OpenAI has implemented a usage-based pricing model for ChatGPT Work, similar to Codex. Enterprise and education administrators can manage spending through an Admin Console. The rollout targets enterprise users, who are now a key revenue source for AI companies.

Global Release of GPT-5.6 Models

OpenAI has also released three new GPT-5.6 models—Sol, Terra, and Luna—to the public. These models were previously restricted to select partners following a request from the US government. CEO Sam Altman described GPT-5.6 as OpenAI’s most powerful model to date.

Among the new models, Sol offers the highest performance, Terra balances efficiency and performance similar to GPT-5.5, and Luna is the most cost-effective option. In benchmark tests, GPT-5.6 Sol slightly outperformed Anthropic's Claude Mythos 5 in the Terminal-Bench 2.1 coding benchmark.

OpenAI is merging the standalone Codex app into the new ChatGPT desktop app, enabling developers to use coding features alongside other work tasks. The updated desktop app is now available worldwide for Windows and macOS, with both Work and Codex features accessible across all plans, including the free tier.

On web and mobile, ChatGPT Work is initially available to Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users. Plus and Business users will gain access in the coming days.
