Russ Salakhutdinov, Yang's former professor and a former VP of Research for Generative AI at Meta, publicly congratulated Yang on the achievement. Salakhutdinov also shared Yang's academic background, highlighting his rapid progress through a PhD at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and his early contributions to machine learning.

Yang Zhilin was born in 1992 in Shantou, Guangdong province, China. He studied at Tsinghua University before completing his PhD at CMU under Salakhutdinov and William Cohen. Yang finished his PhD in four years, making key advances in the field. After graduation, he worked at Google Brain and Meta, publishing several research papers. He later returned to China, contributing to projects like Huawei's PanGu model and the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence's Wu Dao. Yang also co-founded Recurrent AI, a startup focused on using AI to analyze sales conversations.
