Samsung has decided to use OLED panels from Samsung Display for its upcoming Galaxy S27 smartphone, reversing earlier expectations that Chinese supplier BOE would provide the screens. This decision maintains Samsung Display's exclusive role in supplying panels for the company's flagship devices.
Industry sources in Korea reported that Samsung Electronics considered BOE as a supplier for the Galaxy S27's OLED panels. BOE, a major Chinese display manufacturer, already supplies screens for some of Samsung's lower-cost models. However, Samsung's flagship phones have always used panels from Samsung Display, a subsidiary of Samsung Group.
Initial reports suggested that Samsung would choose BOE due to its ability to supply a larger quantity of panels than Samsung Display could provide. This move was expected to help Samsung manage rising costs for memory and storage components in the Galaxy S27 Ultra.
Despite these expectations, Samsung ultimately selected Samsung Display for the Galaxy S27 OLED panels. The company has not publicly explained the reason for this decision. However, local media in Korea speculate that Samsung Display strongly opposed the potential switch to BOE, viewing it as a threat to its position within the flagship product line.
Some executives at Samsung Electronics reportedly disagreed with the idea of using BOE panels for the Galaxy S27. Allowing BOE to supply displays for a flagship model would have carried symbolic significance, potentially undermining Samsung Display's status as the exclusive supplier for high-end Samsung smartphones.
The decision to stick with Samsung Display may affect the pricing of the Galaxy S27. Panels from Samsung Display are typically more expensive than those from BOE. As a result, Samsung may face challenges in offsetting higher costs for memory and storage, which could lead to a price increase for the Galaxy S27 compared to previous models.
Samsung has not confirmed any pricing details for the Galaxy S27. The device is expected to launch next year, with more information on specifications and pricing likely to emerge closer to the release date.
BOE is one of the world's largest display manufacturers and has supplied panels to various smartphone brands. Samsung Display, meanwhile, has maintained a strong reputation for producing high-quality OLED screens, particularly for premium devices.
Samsung Electronics continues to source panels from both companies for different product lines. However, the flagship Galaxy S series remains closely tied to Samsung Display, reinforcing the brand's image and quality standards.
