Samsung has announced that Samsung Wallet now supports Digital Key access for Volkswagen electric vehicles in Europe. This new feature allows users to lock, unlock, and start their cars using a compatible Samsung Galaxy smartphone. The rollout targets Volkswagen EVs running ID. software version 6.0.1. Only vehicles produced on or after April 27, 2026, and equipped with the "Preparation for Digital Key" package, are eligible.
With Samsung Wallet, users can access their Volkswagen EVs without a physical key. The Digital Key uses Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology for hands-free entry. Near Field Communication (NFC) enables tap-based unlocking and starting. The system also supports Remote Key Entry, allowing users to open the trunk remotely.
Digital Keys can be shared with trusted individuals through Samsung Wallet. Owners can set specific access permissions for each person. This feature makes it easy to provide short-term access to friends or family when needed.
Samsung states that its Digital Keys meet EAL6+ certification standards. This level of certification provides advanced protection against unauthorized access. Digital Keys are stored directly on the user's device and are protected by Samsung Knox security.
If a smartphone containing a Digital Key is lost or stolen, users can manage or remove the key remotely. This is possible through the Samsung Find service, which helps maintain security even if the device is compromised.
The Digital Key feature is available only for Volkswagen EVs produced from April 27, 2026, onwards. Vehicles must have the "Preparation for Digital Key" option package and run ID. software version 6.0.1. The rollout is currently limited to Europe.
