Apple is developing a new security feature that could automatically lock an iPhone if it detects a theft while the device is unlocked. This move aims to protect user data during the crucial moments after a phone is snatched. The report, first published by 9to5Mac, highlights that current protections like Find My, Activation Lock, and Stolen Device Protection are less effective if the phone is already unlocked at the time of theft.
The new feature targets situations where thieves steal iPhones while the screen is still unlocked. Apple’s system would use multiple signals to determine if a theft has occurred. One primary indicator would be the iPhone’s accelerometer, which can detect sudden, unusual movements. If the device senses a jerky motion similar to a phone being pulled from someone’s hand, it could immediately trigger a lock.
Another signal involves the distance between the iPhone and a paired Apple Watch. If the phone rapidly moves away from the watch, the system could interpret this as a possible theft. The iPhone may also check for connections to trusted Wi-Fi networks or familiar locations, such as home or work. If the device is snatched in an unfamiliar place, it could respond more aggressively by locking access to sensitive data.
Apple’s retail stores already use a similar system for demo iPhones. Devices automatically lock or disable themselves if removed from the store. However, the new feature is designed for personal devices in real-world theft scenarios. The system would likely extend protections found in Stolen Device Protection, introduced with iOS 17.3. That feature adds biometric checks and security delays for actions like changing passwords or accessing saved credentials when the iPhone is away from familiar locations.
Despite these protections, users remain vulnerable in the seconds after a theft if the phone is unlocked. The new feature aims to close this gap by reacting instantly to suspicious activity.
Apple has not officially announced the feature or provided a release timeline. However, code references suggest the system is under active development. The concept is not unique to Apple. Google offers a similar Theft Detection Lock for Android devices. Google’s tool uses artificial intelligence to detect if a phone is grabbed and quickly moved, automatically locking the screen to protect user data.
Apple’s new feature could provide an extra layer of security for iPhone users, especially in public places where thefts often occur. As smartphone theft continues to be a concern, companies are looking for new ways to protect sensitive information during and after such incidents.
