Samsung Chip Union Approves Historic $340K Bonus, Averts Strike.
Samsung's semiconductor union has approved a massive bonus package averaging $340,000 per worker, successfully averting an 18-day supply chain strike.

Samsung's largest union has approved a significant bonus package for the company's chip division, preventing a potential strike at the world's leading memory chipmaker. Each eligible employee in the division is set to receive an average bonus of $340,000, or approximately Rs 3.25 crore.

Key Highlights

  • Samsung union approved bonus package for chip division employees.
  • Each eligible worker to receive average bonus of $340,000.
  • Agreement helped avert an 18-day strike at the company.
  • Bonus equals 10.5 percent of chip segment operating profit in shares.
  • Samsung's chip division employs about 78,000 workers.

Union Vote and Agreement Details

The union announced on Wednesday that 73.7 percent of participating members supported the agreement. Over 62,600 ballots were cast, representing more than 95 percent of eligible union members, during an electronic vote held over six days. The deal required a simple majority to pass.

This agreement follows recent discussions between Samsung and the union regarding the distribution of the company's strong profits. The approval comes just one week after both parties reached a consensus, helping to avoid an 18-day strike that could have disrupted the global memory chip supply chain.

Bonus Structure and Employee Impact

The bonus applies specifically to Samsung's chip-making division, which manufactures processors and memory chips used in smartphones, laptops, vehicles, and AI datacenters. This division employs about 78,000 workers. The average bonus is estimated at 513 million won, or about $340,000, based on projected operating profit for 2026, according to Bloomberg. Yonhap News reports that workers in the memory division could receive up to 600 million won each, or roughly Rs 3.82 crore.

In March, Samsung reported that employees earned an average of 158 million won, or about Rs 1 crore, in 2025. The new agreement sets annual bonuses for semiconductor division employees at 10.5 percent of the segment's operating profit, paid in shares. Employees will also receive an additional 1.5 percent of profit in cash.

Industry Context and Economic Impact

Samsung recently became the second Asian company, after Taiwan's TSMC, to surpass a trillion-dollar market valuation. The company is a major contributor to South Korea's economy, accounting for about 12.5 percent of the country's gross domestic product. Memory chips represent approximately 35 percent of South Korea's exports.

SK Hynix, another leading memory chipmaker, also awarded bonuses to employees last year following increased demand for memory products. The strong demand for memory chips continues to drive growth in the sector, with Samsung playing a central role in global supply.
